ENT ear surgery

Ear surgery is a speciality of ENT surgery that essentially covers the following procedures: paracentesis, transtympanic aerators or drains, myringoplasty, tympanoplasty, otosclerosis.
The aim is to improve hearing, reduce the number of ear infections, avoid the complications of cholesteatoma (vertigo, facial paralysis, meningitis, cophosis, deafness) and allow bathing by closing tympanic perforations.
These operations are performed on adults and children.

Below is a summary of the ear operations performed by Dr Antoine Delagranda, ENT surgeon at La Roche-sur-Yon in the Vendée. Please click to see the detailed page for each operation.

Paracentesis and tympanic drains

Paracentesis is the act of opening the eardrum by the ENT surgeon. Transtympanic drains or aerators, also known as Yoyo or diabolos, are placed through the eardrum in the paracentesis, with one side in the ear canal and the other in the middle ear. The aim of transtympanic drains is to aerate the middle ear artificially through the tympanic membrane to replace the eustachian tube. This procedure is used for adults and children undergoing outpatient surgery.

Tympanoplasty

Surgery on the eardrum for a simple perforation is known as myringoplasty (or, more rarely, type I tympanoplasty). As soon as the surgery requires more, it is referred to as tympanoplasty, since associated procedures on the ossicles, mastoid and auditory canal can be added if necessary. The operation is performed under general anaesthetic by an ENT surgeon, and requires hospitalisation for 1 or 2 days. It is performed on adults and children.

Myringoplasty

Simple eardrum surgery, also known as myringoplasty or type I tympanoplasty, is a surgical procedure to close a perforation in the eardrum. The operation is performed under general anaesthetic by an ENT surgeon, and generally requires a one-day stay in hospital. It is performed on an outpatient basis for adults and children.

Otosclerosis

Otosclerosis surgery is performed under general anaesthetic by your ENT surgeon on an outpatient basis, except in the event of immediate complications that require a longer hospital stay. It is performed on adults.
